Birding Cusco Apurimac Endemics 2 Days Trips

Birding Day 1: Cusco Apurimac

We pick you up from your Cusco hotel early and head west out of Cusco to Ancahuasi. From here we head across the high plains and Puna Grasslands to the picturesque village of Chonta where we start our 2-hour slow walk to the Condor overlook. We will be birding the whole way as we walk out to the Condors. Andean birds we may see include Golden-billed Saltator, a variety of Sierra Finches, Hooded Siskin, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle and Variable Hawk and much more.
Here we watch up to a dozen Andean Condors with a wingspan of 3 meters after leisurely watching, a picnic lunch and great photo ops, we’ll descend in to the Limatambo Valley for a relaxing night at the Andean Spirit Lodge – a hidden paradise in the Andes. Those with energy may want to look for the endemic Koepcke’s Screech Owl, Peruvian Pygmy Owl and we have seen Buff-fronted Owl here, which is often in the garden. L:D

An early start this morning after breakfast we’ll head for Mollepata and onto Soray Pampa situated under the towering glaciers of the Salkantay massif. Here we can search for the very localized and endemic Vilcabamba Tapaculo. Working our way along the track back to Cusco giving priority to Apurimac endemic birds – we’ll see a variety of species – some possibilities include: d’Orbigny’s Chat-Tyrant, Apurimac Brush Finch (endemic), Apurimac Spinetail (endemic) Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch (endemic), Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Cinereous Conebill, Band-tailed Seedeater, Black-backed Grosbeak, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, Sparkling Violetear, Giant Hummingbird, Andean Lapwing, Plain-colored Seedeater, Red-crested Cotinga, Tit-like Dacnis, Plumbeous Sierra-Finch, White-tufted Sunbeam (endemic), Creamy-crested Spinetail (endemic), Cream-winged Cinclodes, Tyrian Metaltail, Pale-tailed Canastero and White-eared Puffbird and lots more.
